The Big Read is a community wide reading program that is designed to revitalize the role of literature in the nation's popular culture and to bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. The Big Read Texas wil celebrate the work of Amy Tan, best selling author of The Joy Luck Club.
The Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA) and the Harris County Public Library will host an Asian/Pacific American (APA) author discussion regarding the universal themes of The Joy Luck Club - intergenerational conflict, cultural preservation, immigrant experience - and how it shapes their literary works. Featured authors are:
Helen Zia is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People (Farrar Straus and Giroux, 2000), which was a finalist for the prestigious 2000 Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize. Zia is an award-winning journalist and a Contributing Editor to Ms. Magazine, where she was formerly Executive Editor. Her articles, essays and reviews have appeared in numerous publications, including Ms., New York Times, Washington Post, The Nation, Essence, OUT!, Social Policy, and the San Francisco Chronicle.
Quang Bao is the Executive Director of The Asian American Writers’ Workshop, based in New York City. He has received numerous fellowships and awards for his work and his writing has appeared recently in The Boston Globe, The Threepenny Review, The New York Times, Ploughshares and National Public Radio. He is the editor of Take Out: Queer Writing from Asian Pacific America and the forthcoming Penguin Anthology of Asian American Literature. He has just completed his first novel and is working on an art book about visual art, theater and music from Denmark.
